James River Country Club Seeks a Horticulturist

 Requirements:  Degree in Horticulture/Landscape Management.   Must have or be able to obtain a Virginia Pesticide Applicator’s License.  Must pass a pre-employment drug screen.

Job Description:  We are a Private Country Club in Newport News Virginia hiring a horticulturist/landscape manager to maintain landscape features on both golf course and common areas.  Looking for an individual that can create and execute a landscape maintenance program.  This plan should include all facets of landscape care including watering, fertilizing, pruning, pest management, nutrient applications, mulching, design and installation.  Candidate must be a self-starter and have an eye for attention to detail.  This is a working position that also includes planning and supervision.  The club is looking to continue to improve in this area and will accept nothing but the highest standards of conditioning.

Salary:  $15-20/hr

Parks & Recreation Department. Full-time position with benefits. Preferred hiring range: $51,792 - $60,819. Position plans and oversees the design, procurement, installation and maintenance of trees, shrubs and plants around assigned City buildings, facilities and parks; inspects park and/or facility landscape; monitors the health and safety of trees, shrubs, and plantings on assigned City properties and rights-of-way; oversees application of and/or apply herbicides and modifies fertilizer prescriptions and applications using soil sample results. Position engages in and leads installation, maintenance and repair of projects and may operate specialized equipment in the performance of the job duties; coordinates with contractors and oversees the work of consultants and contractors; serves as the lead position responding to citizen landscaping/horticulture-related inquiries and complaints effectively, courteously and tactfully; coordinates special projects with outside agencies, garden clubs, gardeners, and citizens. Position performs detailed vehicle/equipment pre-trip inspections and cleans personal items/trash from vehicle after use; performs proper handling, spill prevention/response and cleanup procedures for fuels and other pollutants to minimize entry into storm water system and provides guidance/training to other employees.   Job Title:  Maintenance Head Gardener (JW Townsend Landscapes)

Job Description:  

The Maintenance Head Gardener will assist the Maintenance Team Leader through landscape maintenance and plant installations.

 The Maintenance Head Gardener will work with a successful and profitable department. During employment, they will gain valuable skills and experience in the plant industry while working in a team environment.

 The position will start immediately. *Winter employment is dependent upon weather.

 Job Skills:

  • Understanding of common landscape plant material including: annuals, perennials, trees, and shrubs
  • Ability to work well with others in a team environment
  • Ability to work 10 hr days and work outside in all weather conditions
  • Strong attention to detail, organization and communication skills
  • Ability to load and unload trucks and lift 50lbs
  • Ability to drive large work trucks

 Responsibilities:

  • Maintain an “A/B” status on assigned landscapes through close monitoring and understanding clients’ needs
  • Communicate with clients and team leader on a regular basis to determine specific needs and create weekly schedules
  • Supervise and train gardening assistants by complying with VNLA standards and leading by example on the job site
  • Maintain trucks and tools to ensure that all tools are present for each day of work and trucks are in proper working order
  • Complete daily administrative tasks through job sheets, “About-time” record-keeping program, and scheduling materials to be loaded for future work
  • Maintain efficiency by planning ahead, using a loading facilitator, and communicating frequently with the Maitenance Team Leader
  • Get and maintain certifications such as VNLA certification and registered technician pesticide applicators license. Maintain these certifications through continuing education opportunities
  • Maintain property logbook/calendar/to do list by staying organized and communicating frequently

 Job Requirements:

  • Minimum of 2-3 years experience in the plant industry
  • VNLA Certification or ability to obtain within 1 year of employment
  • Registered Technician pesticide applicator license
  • Education/Bachelors degree in horticulture or related field is preferred
  • Ability to work long hours in Spring and Fall seasons
  • Flexibility to work occasional weekends
