Guthrie Nursery, Inc. is currently seeking a nursery laborer/crew leader to report directly to our Nursery Manager.  This is a year-round, full-time position.

SUMMARY

As the Nursery laborer, one performs a variety of outside tasks involved in the daily operations of the wholesale nursery. This may expose him/her to all types of weather conditions, as well as other nursery commonalities such as dust, dirt, and chemicals.  Employees are required to follow all safety policies and guidelines as outlined in the employee manual, and as instructed by nursery personnel and in safety meetings.

 This position may require some work on weekends (Saturdays and Sundays) and over 40 hours a week.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform weeding, watering, plant organizing, fertilizing, and pruning.
  • Removing dead plant material and weeds
  • Scouting plant material for pest and disease problems
  • Helping monitor quality of new production and notifying supervisor of any issues.
  • Assisting with general nursery projects, which may include light construction, irrigation installation and repair.
  • Loading and unloading trucks
  • Plant, spray, weed, fertilize, and water shrub and trees using hand tools
  • Operate tractors as well as other machinery and equipment to load/unload trucks
  • Move plant material
  • Record information about plants
  • Perform other assigned duties as needed

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school education preferred
  • Two-year technical college certificate a bonus
  • Training provided by employer, but experience is helpful

 CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS

  • Possession and retention of a valid driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Ability to obtain certifications necessary for specific types of work, such as flagger, forklift operator, chemical applications, and/or first aid and CPR certificates (as applicable).
  • Bi-Lingual preferred Spanish/English

  • Regularly stand and walk throughout the day

Job Description:  

The Maintenance Head Gardener will assist the Maintenance Team Leader through landscape maintenance and plant installations.

 The Maintenance Head Gardener will work with a successful and profitable department. During employment, they will gain valuable skills and experience in the plant industry while working in a team environment.
