Nurseryman of the Year 2001
CARVILLE M. AKEHURST
1931-2001

Carville Akehurst was recognized posthumously as the 2001 VNLA Nurseryman of the Year at the annual meeting of the Virginia Nursery and Landscape Association on Wednesday, January 9, 2002. Nancy Akehurst, and family, accepted the presentation by Bob Papetti, the 2000 recipient of the VNLA Nurseryman of the Year Award.

The memorial portrait (right) was painted by Diana Springer, Lavalette Nurseries, Huntington, WV and presented at the WVNLA meeting at MANTS.

The following tribute to Carville Akehurst was printed in the 2002 MANTS Yearbook and concisely illustrates some of the reasons he was recognized.

Executive Vice President of MANTS

Executive Secretary of the Maryland Nursery and Landscape Assn.

Carville M. Akehurst has been described by many as a husband, father, nurseryman, business associate, friend, board member, practical joker, planner, intellect, consultant, lobbyist, ambassador, diplomat, teacher, guiding spirit, and friend.
bullet
Such words were born out of a career of service and contributions to the nursery industry (the Akehurst family business, the Maryland Nursery and Landscape Association, and MANTS), politics, his church, and most importantly, his service to his country.
bullet
Carville Akehurst will be remembered for his work ethic, sense of moral integrity, the love of a good story, business acumen, and devotion to his family. He was the father of four daughters and the grandfather of six.
bullet
In addition to his service in the horticultural industry, Carville was very active in service to his community. Among his achievements were his appointments by two Maryland governors to the Regional Planning Council and Maryland Health Services Cost Review Commission.
bullet
He also served as Board member and President of the Trustees for Franklin Square Hospital.
bullet
He was a lifetime member of Camp Chapel United Methodist Church in Perry Hall, having served in a leadership position on every committee, some more than once.
His faith, guiding spirit and his love of life will continue to light the way for those he left behind.
