Nurseryman of the Year 2000
ROBERT PAPETTI

Robert Papetti, Onancock, VA was born in East Hartford, CT on July 3, 1933. He married Ellen September 13, 1980. She operates Glick's, a woman's clothing store, in Onancock (that's on the Eastern Shore of Virginia). They have four children: Robert James Papetti, born 1959, Susan Ann Papetti, born 1961, S Geoffery Glick, born 1962, and Jennifer Glick, born 1964. Bob is the proud grandfather of their first granddaughter born on December 23, 2000.

Bob is a 1957 Graduate of University of Connecticut in Nursery Management (2nd in class). He is active on Board of Historical Society, Past President of the ESNA and member since 1974, member of ANLA, NCAN, WNGA IMS and CAN, VNLA member since 1975 and served as VNLA President in 1986, active in International Plant Propagators where he has promoted the use of native and saltwater tolerant plants before they were the "in" thing.                                                                  (L) Papetti receives award from Jim Snyder

He is the owner of Bobtown Nursery since 1980, which he started after he moved down from Connecticut to New Jersey, where he had a Japanese Red Maple Nursery. When he moved to Virginia, he sold his nursery corporation to his partner, C.R. Burr & Co, which included the old Peninsula Nursery in Melfa, VA.

Hobbies include: fishing, hunting with a bow, old cars, stamps, coins, old bottles, insulators and dogs.

The First VNA/VSLD Joint Summer Meeting and Trade Show was held in Virginia Beach with 107 exhibitors

The VNA Board voted to allow MANTS to a take over the Summer Trade Show

VA Beach Extension Center name changed to Hampton Roads Agricultural Experiment Station

Dr. Bonnie Appleton was hired at Virginia Tech

Jeff Miller was hired as part-time executive director

John Machen was named Virginia Nurseryman of the Year

VNA membership increased from 251 to 314 (20% increase)

He has been one of the "behind the scenes" VNLA volunteers over the years supporting the research foundation, fund raising and research.
