Farm Crew Chief
The Farm Crew Chief executes a wide variety of fieldwork related to tree production, including but not limited to: pruning; digging; insect and disease scouting; applying nutrients and weed control products - often organic formulations; irrigation installation; harvesting; loading trucks and similar tasks. the incumbent supervises field activities whenever the nursery manager or assistant nursery manager are not on the jobsite, ensures efficient and effective operations, directs staff as needed, and communicates challenges encountered to the chain of command. this position reports directly to the assistant nursery manager, and interfaces with other department staff as needed. finally, the farm crew chief leads by example, serving as a point of reference for farm crew in the execution of their work.

This is a seasonal position april-december. the gardener/horticulturist/landscape maintenance team member follows standard accepted practices to maintain trees, shrubs, perennials annual plants and vines to remain healthy and aesthetically appropriate. daily activities include:

General job duties:
hand prune small trees and shrubs
garden maintenance and annual flower care within a commercial environment (includes: deadheading, fertilizing, dividing, transplanting, inspecting for disease and infestations)
installs small and large plantings including trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals
weeds planting beds
sprays weeds with herbicides
assists with spring and fall cleanups
assists with mulching
performs quality control checks and property inspections
drive between job sites as necessary

minimum qualifications:
field experience within a landscape maintenance environment (2-4 years preferred)
plant identification skills
pruning and perennial plant maintenance skills
detail oriented
having a valid driver's license and able to get to work reliably
physical stamina to remain on your feet, squat, kneel, lift for long periods of time
have a sense of timeliness and urgency

the operations manager is primarily responsible for assuring that historic evergreen and east end cemeteries are well cared for, maintained, and accessible to families and the general public throughout the year.the operations manager is also an ambassador for historic evergreen cemetery, east end cemetery, and the enrichmond foundation in the community and must be comfortable welcoming relatives, community members, and guests of evergreen an east end cemeteries.

the operations manager works under the direction and supervision of enrichmond’s executive director to:

  • perform and manage all grounds keeping duties at evergreen and east end cemeteries, ensuring these unique landscapes are neat, attractive, and safe for visitors and volunteers.
  • ensure all work complies with evergreen’s and east end’s restoration and maintenance standards and safety procedures.
  • perform daily maintenance, such as regular mowing, weed trimming and removal,maintaining hardscape, clearing snow and debris on private drive and walkways, trash and debris removal and providing horticulturally appropriate plant care.
  • provide excellent and responsive service to all visitors.
  • welcome, direct, and address volunteer groups in grounds keeping and maintenance tasks.
  • proactively elevate complex issues to the executive director.

work schedule: tuesday - saturday, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. and some evenings.
minimum skills & knowledge required:

  • three years of supervisory experience
  • knowledge of horticulture and/or professional landscape maintenance practices, tools and equipment including turf care, ornamental plant care, and tree care
  • proficient with common landscape hand and power tools including mowers, string trimmers, edgers, leaf blowers, pruning tools and other common landscape tools
  • able to work alone and as part of a team
  • able to competently operate a variety of vehicles, on and off road, and in challenging conditions, including poor weather
  • able to read, understand, and follow procedures and instructions
  • able to communicate clearly and respectfully with others, with a customer-service orientation and manner
  • experienced in email management and able to use a personal computer
